    Photo

Photo taken on 22nd March 2010 with my Sony A200 and run through the iPhone tiltshift app.

This is the view from Gunwharf Quays towards the Solent. The area to the left is Old Portsmouth – specifically the Spice Island inn.

  • Photo: On the beach – faded charm of the Isle of Wight

    Sandown-beach

Photo of Sandown Beach on the Isle of Wight. Taken on 21st March 2010 with Sony A200 and edited in Camerabag for Mac using Lolo, Instant and ColorCross filters with reprocessing.

I used to visit the Isle of Wight as a child but the faded look is sadly appropriate as a lot of the island felt like it was still stuck in the 1950's. On a sunny day at the end of March it was hard to find places – particularly in Sandown – open for business; shops were run down or empty, buildings in need of a coat of paint.

There is a vicious circle in the idea of a "tourist season" – act like there is one and it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The tourists won't come to visit if nowhere is open for business, and then you can't make the money and then you won't be left with a business to open. The places that were open (some parts of Shanklin, all of Godshill) illustrated that the business was there if the effort to attract it was made. There is after all a reason Cornwall and The Lake District do good business all year round…

  • Photo: Gothic arches at Winchester Cathedral (#camerabag)

    Winchester-gothic

This photo of Winchester Cathedral was taken on 19th March 2010 with my Sony A200. This is a fabulous passageway leading from the front of the cathedral towards the area of the Deanery and Winchester School. The vast amount of stonework and flying buttresses illustrates the remarkable superstructure that was required to hold up one of these enormous buildings.

Edited in Camerabag for Mac using 1962, ColorCross and Instant filters with Reprocess on.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

This was quite strange. The family graves in the churchyard are covered in heather.

  • No-cook chocolate biscuit cake recipe

    Ingredients

    • 125g unsalted butter
    • 85g golden syrup
    • 200g dark chocolate
    • 1 egg
    • 55g digestive biscuits
    • 55g nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts or any you prefer)
    • 55g sultanas
    • 55g glacé cherries (reserve some for decoration)

    Instructions

    1. Line the tin that you’re going to use with baking parchment. The mixture is enough to fill a 2lb loaf tin making 10 fairly deep, large slices. A tin of any similar size (round or square) could be used instead. If you double the ingredients you can make enough for a large traybake.
    2. Melt the butter and syrup together in a saucepan over a gentle heat until they begin to boil
    3. Melt the chocolate over a saucepan of simmering water, then add the egg and the butter & syrup. Mix together well
    4. In a bowl, break the biscuits into large chunks and then add the nuts, sultanas and most of the cherries
    5. Pour the chocolate mix onto the dry ingredients and stir until well combined
    6. Press the mixture into the prepared tin and decorate with the reserved cherries
    7. Leave to set in the fridge for at least 4 hours
