Critique of a site pretending to be contemporary that’s essentially commissioning spec work. Just don’t do it – designing for free or cheap just dimishes the profession and results in really bad work

Where is the horse and the rider…
Where is the horn that was blowing…
They have passed like rain on the mountains…
    Like wind in the meadow…
The days have come down in the West…
    Behind the hills into shadow…

  • New Month, New Layout

Decided to change the layout on this tumblelog. It’s now modelled on the “This is not a template” template but will gradually change as I mess around with fonts, colours and position

When I was a child, people used to talk about what would happen by the year 2000. For the next thirty years they kept talking about what would happen by the year 2000, and now no one mentions a future date at all. The future has been shrinking by one year per year for my entire life.

The same tree I posted earlier but with some Photoshopping. Basically duplicated the layer a couple of times and altered blend modes. Effect turned out pretty well

The Eden Project on a sunny day. Of the pictures I’ve taken over the years this is one of my favourites.

  • 2009 Resolutions

A day late – but better than never – these are my resolutions for 2009

    Exercise more consistently
I have an exercise bike and do use it but there are weeks when I just don’t get round to it. I’m going to aim for cycling 5 days a week and at least 70km
    Stop buying so many clothes
Seriously, how many henley t-shirts from Gap does one person need? This one will not kick in until the middle of January though because there are sales to get through first and I am a realist 🙂
Read all the books I’ve bought
I have a lot of unread or half-completed books that I just haven’t got round to. I need to actually make more time for reading
    Go to the cinema more
Probably only made 30-35 trips to the cinema this year. By comparison to most people that’s a lot but I have made a movie a week before now. With the new Showcase in Leicester city centre it’s easier to get to from work and the seats are comfortable. you can normally find something worth watching – even if it’s only to heckle
    Get a proper personal site
I really need somewhere I can properly experiment with layout, colour and typography. I need to get past the fact that because I do this in a corporate environment on a daily basis I just don’t feel like messing with code at home

Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies – or else?
The chain reaction of evil – hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars – must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

More people should watch Fringe. It’s the X-Files if people weren’t being hit on the head (Scully…) to stop them seeing the weird stuff happening.
